There are few places that truthfully offer the variety of things to see and do to equal the Hampton Roads metro area - and Chesapeake, Virginia sits in the middle of all of it.   With its many attractions, the city of Chesapeake is the perfect launching point for your next getaway. Among these attractions are golf, historic sites, waterways, and several parks to fill your days. Chesapeake is conveniently located about 20 minutes from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, about 40 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg, and about 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. There are 7 main  districts within the city of Chesapeake; Greenbrier, Indian River, Great Bridge, Hickory, Deep Creek, South Norfolk, and Western Branch.

Chesapeake Schools

All Chesapeake Public Schools are accredited by State SOL Accreditation. There are six public high schools, 10 public middle schools, and twenty eight elementary schools in Chesapeake. Additionally, there are currently three special centers for education. Currently there over 40,000 students enrolled in Chesapeake public schools.

 

Chesapeake Area Attractions

Among the many attractions are:

  • the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, which links the Chesapeake Bay to North Carolina’s sounds, thereby providing a connection between Boston and Key West, Florida
  • the Chesapeake Arboretum, containing 48-acres and featuring a mature hardwood forest as well as an 18th Century farmhouse with theme gardens
  • the  Chesapeake City Park ,covering 75 acres, 45 of which are cleared and features a skate park, Fun Forest playground for children, a venue for Symphony Under the Stars, as well as the annual Chesapeake Jubilee
  • the Chesapeake Planetarium at the Municipal Center offers free public programs, including telescope observations; plus, there are many other features of the area to fill up your activities calendar.

For shopping in Chesapeake, there are plenty of opportunities at the Portlock Galleries in South Norfolk or in one of the antique shops.  For more traditional shopping, try one of several malls, as well as specialty shops which offer gift and souvenir shopping. Some of the best shopping areas are located in the Greenbrier and Western Branch districts, Including the Greenbrier shopping mall in Greenbrier, and Chesapeake Square mall in the Western Branch district.

And for Cheasapeake dining, be sure not to fill up before getting to Chesapeake because it doesn’t matter what your in the mood to eat- Chesapeake restaurants are sure to have something to please your pallet.  There are recognized names in dining as well as local favorites, with a wide array of choices from casual to fine dining.
